Standards for Mobile Digital Television Devices Announced; Includes Captioning Compatibility

The Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) has released A/153: Mobile DTV Standards. The Mobile DTV Standards define “the technical specifications necessary for broadcasters to provide new services for mobile and handheld devices using the digital television (DTV) transmissions.” These standards mark the first time that a video program transmission technology was planned from the start to support closed captioning, rather than requiring an after-the-fact retrofit or modification.

Captioning Groups on Facebook & LinkedIn

NCRA has created two networking groups for captioners on the internet's most popular networking sites!

Facebook - This group is members only and will require administrator approval. To find us on Facebook, please login to your Facbook account and search "Captioners NCRA".

LinkedIn - This group is open to anyone, however administrator approval is required. To find us on LinkedIn, please use the keyword "captioning" in the "search groups" function.

Recommended Style and Format Guidelines

The NCRA Captioning Community of Interest has issued a document with captioning style and format guidelines for U.S. television programming. The 62-page document provides guidance for independent realtime captioners on a multitude of style and formatting issues, including parentheticals, obscenities and other sensitive words, scripting, musical notes and lyrics, slang and poor grammar, and much more. The guidelines are meant to complement the guidelines that some captioning companies require their captioners to follow. The Community of Interest notes that when captioning companies have guidelines in place for their captioners, the captioning company guidelines take precedence.
